“Drowning In student loan debt”. “Not saving enough toward retirement”. “Making less money”. “Unable to purchase a home.” “Living with their parents”. “Can’t afford to get married or have kids”. Yes, we’ve all seen the bleak headlines about millennials and money. It doesn’t have to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, however. All around us we see exceptions to these “rules”. We can’t just write off a whole generation with clichés and millennials should not become distressed and simply give up and give in.
There are many things going for millennials. A high level of employment opportunities driving up wages in many industries, technological proficiency since an early age, social media, the availability of paid apprenticeships and internships, flexible gig economy opportunities, the increase in apartment communities in vibrant communities, entrepreneurialism and so much more.
There are also people willing to help. You don’t have to already be wealthy to talk to a financial advisor. In a consultation, a financial advisor can help discuss ways in which saving and investing can be automated and simplified, along with age and stage appropriate products and services to help lay a financial foundation in life. Over time, you can develop a relationship to discuss money matters as they arise - and turn to the advisor for advice, as a sounding board, as a part of your overall wealth management team. As needs change, so will goals and objectives, risk tolerance, and attitudes about money. The financial advisor can be there at each step, helping to navigate the course.
You can call, email, or INmail. Just make an appointment. Whether or not you use your parent’s financial advisor is up to you. Please know what you discuss with your financial advisor is your business and kept in confidence.
No matter your “Point A”, there will be a “Point B” if you work toward it, no matter how far off it may be in the distance. Your financial future starts now.
